Ideas for boost gauge placement

Having my boost gauge installed Friday and just looking for some pictures from people to try to decide where to get it mounted. It would be a dash mount not an A pillar mount (unless I somehow mount it sideways off the A pillar, not out of the question if it looks ok). What I would really like would be to have it on the dash on the left next to the A pillar, but I just do not think there is enough room between the window and the defroster air vents. So any pictures of some nice mounting points would be appreciated.

Fore reference as to the meter and mount:

I have had this on my previous 08 and now on my 2013.
No holes and completely reversible.

I know it's a different car, but on my TT I had a boost gauge in place of one of the air vents, the mounting ring even had slots in it so that some air still flowed. Would that be possible?

This is what I did with my oil pressure and oil temp. Will post an installed pic when I can

Yes, it is possible, I have seen pictures where people replaced the air vent on the drivers side above the radio. But I would mount it like fastredrat on the dash before I went that route personally.

I did find one picture and am hoping mine will fit like this one:

I know dash mounts or pillar mounts aren't for everyone. I don't personally like them that much. Is the little pocket near the trunk button too low and out of sight to consider?

On the other hand, fastredrat made a very acceptable effort at a nice clean dash mount. I approve of that for sure.

Also, Fab9 does a simple standoff bracket for glovebox mounting. I like this solution too, for stealth purposes and because how often do you actually need that info? They do a double one for a fuel/air too. You could easily copy the idea and make one yourself.

I went with a different type digital boost gauge in the same location to keep things small. Boost on the left and oil temp on the right.

Yeah, that looks pretty clean too. I went with mechanical because I was told that they are the more accurate of the two types. But to be perfectly honest the amount of times I will probably be looking at it is minimal. Once the shop gets the boost dialed in Friday then that is really all I needed it for. I have been running without a gauge since the RFT install months ago with no issue at all.

And as long as all goes according to plan I will then have it on the Dyno Saturday to see what kind of numbers i'm really at. No matter the outcome (meaning it is lower than the number I have in my mind) it is still an absolute blast to drive (and surprise people with).

on my old GTI, I attached and centered the boost gauge to the plastic covering the steering column. Covering up the mileage wasn’t a big deal, but it looked nice and clean from behind steering wheel... besides it’s easy to buy a spare column cover.

Surprisingly you can still see everything behind it, even with the auto. You can't tell by the pic but sitting in the car you could read everything. Great for monitoring belt slip.

Autometer sent me a LED to match the dash lights but I never got around to putting it in. Connected it to the blue wire on the back of the cluster IIRC.

It would be great if it were a little smaller and would fit where the useless oil temp gauge is.

You know, I never thought about mounting it to the cover. Might have worked great. It is fairly forward of the plastic cover so it may have fit perfect but the depth might get ya. That was the lowest profile gauge mount I could find. Plus it swiveled.

I’m just using the boost reading on the scangauge mounted next to the A pillar with some magnets and a thin rj45 cable.

I butchered a prosport stepper gauge which replaced the fake oil pressure gauge on my 05 MSM many years ago. In my eyes super clean (with matching gauge face) and very usable compared to pillar or vent mounted.
I expect the job to be similar for the NC:
http://www.mazdaspeedy.com/2012/02/p...e.html?q=gauge

I'm sure there are better gauges that can be put in that location today. I would go with a OLED based gauge that could display other data as well. Several projects going on with arduino.

That looks great. I just had it done by the vent like the above picture. Looks fine and is not in the way.

Have you just stuck the magnets to the bottom of the scanguage? Is there enough metal behind the dash for it to just stay in place?

Cheers,

Josh

It's stuck on with two thin metal plates (one on bottom of SG and other is on the dash) from a Scosche magnetic phone mount kit and some thin neodymium magnets.

Brian Touw (btouw@yahoo.com) made that for me. I sent him my a-pillar and he sent it back with the pod on it. I think he's done a few of them.

Air Vent Example

Wasn't too complicated to do it this way.

That’s what I did too. Very clean. I just put foam inside the vent tube so the heater wouldn’t cook the gauge in the winter.
